Tips for a Successful Relocation

Please note that we keep the following Tips and Suggestions current, however procedures and laws do change often or at the discretion of any specific government employee. OneWorld cannot be held responsible for any changes at any time that differs from the most current information listed below. 10/08

Protecting Your Identity

Once you have a new home number, you might want to register your new number at the U.S. Government’s DO NOT CALL LIST: Click Here for Do Not Call List. This registration will prohibit solicitors from being legally allowed to contact you randomly for sales, advertisements, surveys, etc.

Never give out any personal information on the phone if a solicitor does get through to you. You should say “no thank you” and hang up. Or, if you really believe it is a legatine phone call, you could simply tell them that they may mail something to you and then hang up. If it is a legitimate phone call, the caller would already know your mailing address – and therefore, you should not give it.

Keep your passwords in a secret location in cryption. Especially any password that corresponds to your ATM Banking card in a secret and separate location from the card itself.

Keep a list of credit card numbers in cryption in a secret location in the slim event your wallet or purse gets stolen. Along with each card number, keep the customer service number so that you can call each company to report the card stolen.

U.S. Social Security
SSA = (Social Security Administration)
SS# = (Social Security number)

If you are a non-U.S. born OneWorld client coming into the United States to work, our WOW ™ services include accompaniment to the local social security office if policy permits. Applying for a Social Security card is a relatively easy process, if you are patient, and provided you bring all of the required documentation, the completed SSA form Click Here for SSA Form and follow our recommend guidelines.

The U.S. Government mandates a personal interview for anyone who is applying for a SS# for the first time and we strongly suggest that you wait at least ten (10) business days before applying from the date of your arrival so that the U.S. Homeland Security Department has had the proper amount of time to share your data with the SSA.

If you arrive to the U.S. and again leave before your application to the SSA, your arrival date starts all over and we will again suggest you wait the 10 days before applying.

When you first reach to the United States you will go thru customs with a company sponsored VISA and will be required to complete an I-94 form. A portion of the I-94 form will be placed in your passport and stamped with your entry date. We cannot stress the importance of double checking that all of your I-94 information matches your passport exactly with hyphens, sur names, given names, etc.

To apply for a card you will want to provide as much documentation as possible, but not less than your company sponsored VISA, I- 94, unexpired Passport, either your office Picture ID or your home country’s driver's license, translated to English. You may also bring Form I-551 (includes machine - readable immigrant visa with your unexpired foreign passport) or a work permit card (i-766 or I- 698B). Although not a mandatory requirement, we also suggest keeping handy, your birth certificate and your employment letter on company letterhead. If nothing else, be sure that all of your information is translated to English, and that there are no errors, typos and that you complete the application in the proper order such as Sur Name, Given Name, etc. Even the slightest error will hold up the entire process.

We will discuss this further as we approach the SSA clerk on the day of your visit, however, unless the SSA clerk confirms that your data has been inputted into their system, you will need to leave and return approximately five (5) days later.

The SSA offices open Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm. An appointment is not needed, and the process should take approximately 90 to 120 minutes from the time you walk into the office until the time you leave. Try and avoid lunch hour between 12 noon and 2:00pm. Approximately five business days after your application is submitted you will be able to obtain your social security number by returning to the SSA but allow at least three (3) weeks to actually receive your Social Security Card in the mail.

For SSA office locations and further information you can visit the SSA web site at: SSA Link and then click on top left “Social Security Number and Card” - or call toll free:

1-800-772-1213 7am-12 midnight, Monday-Friday and Saturday 8am to 5:00pm
Hit “0” button when they ask for a current SS#

Please note that all SSA procedures are subject to change

U.S. Homeland Security Change of Address for Foreign Nationals

Department of Homeland Security (DHS), through the Immigration and Nationality Act, requires that all alien statuses in the U.S. report his or her address to the DHS. Please do so immediately upon buying or renting a home in your destination and have an address. Click here for the instructions and for more information: Instructions on Address Change.

U.S. Driver's License

Most U.S. states recognize valid driver licenses issued to and held by residents of other nations for a period of time before they become residents.

During such time, you will need to have secondary to your license an International Driving Permit/License (IDL), which you must buy while in your home country. However this does not replace your current driver’s license and should be used only as an identification supplement. An IDL may be purchased at your local Automobile Club Association or the like for a nominal fee and is not valid in an individual’s country of residence.

Chinese Driver's Licenses present a challenge here in the United States as China never signed up for the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic as many other countries have done and therefore many U.S. states will not recognize a Chinese Driver’s License as a legal document. Additionally, China does not issue IDL’s to its residents. We strongly urge anyone relocating to the United States who holds a Chinese Driver’s License to have the license translated to English, notarized and certified by an official translator. If you cannot do this while still in your home country, OneWorld Relocation will assist you in brining the license to a translator here in the U.S.

Click Here for more information on IDL

Once you become a resident of any state, you will be required to apply for a driver license of that same state. Please beware that each state has mandatory time requirements as to when you need to apply. Please discuss timing and procedures with your local OneWorld Relocation destination specialist.

Besides the proof of identity in which you will need to provide at least your passport, current license and other items to meet a “stringent ID Verification System” you will need a Social Security Number. So, the first step to get a driver license, once you have indeed received your social security number, is to apply for a learner permit. The application must be done in person at the nearest Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) office, also known under similar names. The best time to go is first thing in the morning when the lines are the shortest. It is best to avoid lunch hour between 12 noon and 2:00pm. See your destination city for the local DMV web pages showing specific rules, regulations and office locations.

Although part of our WOW ™ service includes accompaniment to the Driver’s License Bureau, here are some interesting and important tips for a few of the states:

New York bound transferees: New York State Driver License Bureau

Once you arrive into the state of New York, and become a resident, you have 30-days to apply for a New York State Driver's License.

New York will ask you to pass a vision and written test in order to obtain your learners permit. You will be required to complete a 5-hour pre-licensing course and then pass a road test in order to get your license.

Canadian nationals are the only country to have reciprocity and therefore, get their testing
California bound transferees: California Driver License Bureau

California is one of the more strict states in licensing procedures. The state requires that all new long term permanent residents obtain a California state license within 10-days of establishing residency, and of course a SS# is needed. Since our foreign born clients will not have a SS# within such time, you may go to the Driver’s License bureau with the letter from the SSA that you at least made application. However, there is also no known penalty for not applying for a driver’s license within 10-days.
Washington bound transferees: Washington State Motor Vehicle Bureau

The DOL (Department of Licensing) in state of Washington changed their policy recently to mandate a 30 day ruling on new residents, down from a whole year in the past. However, when you apply for your first Washington State driver license, instruction permit, or ID card, you must prove you have a Washington State residential address and they will not accept a lease or a bank statement as part of the proof! Please ask your OneWorld Specialist what you can show as approved residency requirement.
Florida bound transferees: Florida Dept of Motor Vehicles

As of October 1, 2008, Florida now requires a social security number along with all of the other standard documentation in order to receive a driver license. In the past, a Social Security number was not required.
New Jersey bound transferees: New Jersey Motor Vehicle Bureau

The Department of Motor Vehicles is called the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission or the (MVC). Once you arrive into the U.S. and become a resident, you have 60-days to apply for a New Jersey Driver’s License.

Driving and Traveling in the United States:

'BUCKLE UP FOR SAFETY'

Automobiles:American and foreign made, most automatic
Driver’s Seat:Located inside the Front LEFT SIDE of the vehicle.
Seat Belts:All States Require Drivers and Front Seat Passengers to Wear Seat Belts for Safety, However not all States require Back Seat Passengers to Wear Them.
Children:Children under age 12 must sit in the back seat and Wear Seat Belts at All Times. Each State has a Weight or Age limit mandated for use of Approved "Baby/Child Seats"
Driving Rules:Vehicles are driven on the right side of the road.
Turn right on Red:In most states, Right Turns Can Be Made at a Red Light, After a Full Stop, unless Posted Otherwise. You cannot make a Right Turn on Red anytime in the City of New York, unless sign next to light states otherwise
Slower Drivers:On freeways/highways, slower drivers should use the right lane unless the sign Above terms it an "Exit Only" lane.
Speed Limit:Signs indicating speed limits are posted at all municipalities. Example: 35 mph (miles per hour) not posted in kilometers.
Passing:Allowable on both the inside and outside lanes on major highways
Double Yellow Line:Do Not pass on either side of the road

You can pull into any Gas station, and read the instructions for paying by cash or with a credit card. Select Unleaded gas for most cars, lift the nozzle, and begin filling your gas tank.
Alcohol:Open cans / bottles are strictly forbidden in vehicles and may lead to arrest if Intoxication level is over the legal limit.

Police Officer Etiquette

What to do if a police officer stops you while driving:
  1. If you see a flashing light on a police car, put your blinker on and pull your car to the right side of the road as soon as it is safe to do. If the right side is a hazard, you may pull into a parking lot or to the left side of the road if you are sure it is safe. If at any time, you are suspicious that it is not a legitimate officer of the law, call 911 and ask if they can make contact with the officer behind you or pull into a public place.
  2. Roll down your window and wait in the car until the police officer approaches you.
  3. Have your driver’s license and International Driver License ready in your hand along with your car registration. The officer might also ask for your auto insurance card.
  4. Once the officer tells you why they pulled you over, be courteous, and cooperate.
  5. Do not offer cash to the officer in order to pay your fine as all fines need to be paid by check in the mail or in traffic court.
  6. They will only ask you to get out of the car if they think you have been drinking alcohol or if they see anything suspicious in your car.
What to do if you are in an automobile accident:
  1. Although each state varies a little, it is always best to immediately stop your car and make sure everyone is okay and safe.
  2. If it is a serious. Accident, you do not want to move the car so that the police and emergency vehicles can determine who is at fault and/or take care of the injured.
  3. If it is a small fender bender it is probably okay to move your car off to the side of the road so that traffic may resume.
  4. Contact the Police by dialing 911.
  5. They will instruct you to file a police report and guide you further for local customs.
  6. Exchange your insurance and contact information with the other driver.
  7. Write down their car make, model and year along with the license plate.
  8. Be courteous, but not overly talkative about how the accident happened. Let the police officers and insurance companies determine such.

Building U.S. Credit as soon as possible

One way in which we suggest starting to build your credit is through the U.S. based credit card that OneWorld Relocation has been instrumental in helping you obtain through a major bank. We suggest that you first make a purchase and then immediately go to the local bank branch and make an immediate payment. Congratulations, you have just established your first on-time payment history. Though it takes many months to show good credit, this is an excellent way to start.

Another option is to contact your home American Express Office and ask I they will transfer your credit to a U.S. Amex Card. You will want to provide your social security number so it ensures the on time performance matches your credit history. Click here AMEX

Telephone Service

You will have the option of choosing from various providers depending where you reside. It is most cost effective to bundle the service together if you chose all four service, plus the internet and/or cable TV service.

In the U.S., there are four kinds of telephone service:
  • Local: in and around your destination town, city or village. Most local calls within the same area code, it is necessary to dial only the 7 – digit number. However, when calling to any other area code, you will need to dial the area code, even if it is a local call plus you must first dial a “1”. Example: 1-718-555-1212 from Manhattan to Brooklyn.
  • Regional: outside your town, city or village, but within close proximity. You will need to dial the area code and phone number, preceded by the Number 1. Example: 1-212-555-1212.
  • Long Distance: Far from your area and definitely outside your area code. You will need to dial the area code and phone number, preceded by the Number 1. Example: 1-714-555-1212.
  • International (to call outside the U.S.) You must start with the international code of 011, followed by, the country code, the city code, followed by the 7-digit number. For Example, 011-46 702 44 02 47
Directory Assistance is usually done by dialing 411. This is expensive as the phone company charges you each time you use this service. Instead we recommend a free service on line www.411.com

Directory Listing is how you wish to be printed in the telephone book and on-line directly, if at all. You may choose to be “non-directly” listed, however their is usually an additional fee for this.

“800” and “888” Numbers – These numbers are toll-free; that is, your call to them is free even if the recipient is not in the local calling area. Dial “1” plus “800” or “888” then the number.

“900” Numbers – If you call a number with “900” or “915” or “976”, you may pay extra for the call and can become quite expensive. Prior to calling, check to see how much the cost is per minute.

Operator Assistance Calls – Dial “O” for Operator Assistance

Telephones are not are not very expensive in the U.S. You will need to buy a telephone before the installation technician can come over to turn on the services ordered.

You may also choose from many additional features at an additional cost. Here are just some:
  • Auto Dial & Voice Command
With AutoDial, you can dial frequent numbers with the push of one button or with a single word.
  • Call Forward Busy
This feature can be added to your phone when you would like calls to be forwarded to another phone number if your phone line is busy.
  • Call Forward Don't Answer
Allows call forwarding to a pre-selected phone number after the line has rung 3-8 times.
  • Call Forward Programmable
This feature allows incoming calls to be forwarded to another University telephone number. This is a convenient way to provide coverage when away from your desk.
  • Call Hold
Allows you to place a current call on hold. You can then answer another ringing telephone, make an outgoing call, or retrieve a waiting call.
  • Call Waiting
Allows a user to hear a tone when they are on the line to notify them that another call is trying to reach them. Users have the option of answering the second call or allowing it to go unanswered. If answered, the user can toggle between calls using the transfer button.
  • Inbound Caller ID
At a glance, identify the name and telephone number of the person calling. Inbound Caller ID is available at no charge on most University lines. It requires either a Caller ID telephone or Caller ID display box.
  • Outbound Caller ID
You can also block your ID on any specific call by first dialing *67 then 9 and the number you wish to reach. The actual text displayed to the person receiving the call will then depend upon the telephone service they use. Some services display no text or a non-descriptive phrase such as "Unknown Caller."
  • Ring Again
Ring Again can be used to notify you that the busy University number you have tried to reach is now idle, ready to accept incoming calls. It can automatically connect you when you lift your receiver.
  • Simultaneous Ring
If you work in multiple locations, the feature allows you to personally direct calls from your phone to up to five locations, including your cell phone and pager, all at the same time. With this feature, you are able to easily set up and change where your calls are directed. The feature is restricted to your local calling area.
  • Three-Way Conference
Up to three parties may participate in a group conversation using the Three-Way Conference feature.

Traveling with Pets, Importation of Animals and Animal Products into the United States

The CDC - Center for Disease Control regulations the importation of dogs, cats, turtles, monkeys, other animals, and animal products capable of causing human disease. Requirements for the importation of the most common pets are described below. Pets taken out of the United States are subject upon return, to the same regulations as those entering for the first time. The CDC does not require general certificates of health for pets for entry into the United States. However, health certificates may be required for entry into some states, or may be required by airlines for pets. You should check with officials in your state of destination and with your airline prior to your travel date. October 8, 2008

Importation of dogs

A general certificate of health is not required by CDC for entry of pet dogs into the United States, although some airlines or states may require them. However, pet dogs are subject to inspection at ports of entry and may be denied entry into the United States if they have evidence of an infectious disease that can be transmitted to humans. If a dog appears to be ill, further examination by a licensed veterinarian at the owner's expense might be required at the port of entry.

Proof of Rabies Vaccination: Dogs must have a certificate showing they have been vaccinated against rabies at least 30 days prior to entry into the United States. These requirements apply equally to service animals such as Seeing Eye dogs.

Importation of Unvaccinated Dogs: Dogs not accompanied by proof of rabies vaccination, including those that are too young to be vaccinated (i.e. less than 3 months of age), may be admitted if the importer completes a confinement agreement (see below) and confines the animal until it is considered adequately vaccinated against rabies (the vaccine is not considered effective until 30 days after the date of vaccination). Spanish, French, and Russian translations of form CDC 75.37 are available, but must be completed in English. October 8, 2008

Importation of cats

A general certificate of health is not required by CDC for entry of pet cats into the United States, although some airlines or states may require them. However, pet cats are subject to inspection at ports of entry and may be denied entry into the United States if they have evidence of an infectious disease that can be transmitted to humans. If a cat appears to be ill, further examination by a licensed veterinarian at the owner's expense might be required at the port of entry.

Cats are not required to have proof of rabies vaccination for importation into the United States. However, some states require vaccination of cats for rabies, so it is a good idea to check with state and local health authorities at your final destination. October 8, 2008

Replacement of a lost or stolen I-94 Card - Department of Homeland Security (DHS)

An I-94 Card is a small green or white card given to all nonimmigrants when they enter the United States. The I-94 card serves as evidence that a nonimmigrant has entered the country legally. It is stamped with a date indicating how long the nonimmigrant may stay for that particular trip. It is this date--and not the expiration date of the visa--that controls how long a nonimmigrant can remain in the United States.
